How Trenchless Pipe Bursting Saves Your Landscaping

If you need a new sewer line, your first thought is probably about your yard. Replacing a sewer main traditionally requires digging a trench right through your landscaping, grass, and driveway. Fortunately, trenchless pipe bursting offers a non-invasive alternative.

Pipe bursting is a modern sewer replacement method that replaces old, collapsed, or clay pipes from the inside out, saving you thousands of dollars in yard restoration costs. Here is how it works:

The Pipe Bursting Process Explained

  1. Two Entry Pits: Instead of digging a long trench, technicians dig two small pits at either end of the sewer line (usually near the house foundation and near the street tap).
  2. The Pulling Cable: A steel cable is fed through the old pipe, connecting the two entry points.
  3. The Bursting Head: A heavy, bullet-shaped steel expansion head is attached to the cable. The back of the head is fused to a new, seamless HDPE pipe.
  4. Shattering the Old Pipe: A hydraulic puller drags the steel head through the old pipe. As the head moves, it shatters the old clay or cast iron pipe, pushing the fragments into the surrounding soil.
  5. Installing the New Pipe: The expansion head simultaneously pulls the new HDPE pipe into place, completing the replacement.

Why Choose Pipe Bursting?

Seamless HDPE pipe is incredibly durable, flexible, and has a lifespan of over 100 years. Best of all, pipe bursting keeps your trees, lawn, and driveway intact, making it the most cost-effective sewer replacement option available.
